mammuthus is able to be at the origin of many discoveries due to a presence in the region that spans two decades and relies on a vast network of contacts, from internationally renowned scientists to Siberian nomadic peoples. The expeditions rely on this network for leads and support in the field.

Expeditions are the life-blood of mammuthus. At present the program has identified seven regions across the Siberian North for their paleontological interest. A local team in each region helps with coordination and is in charge of scouting & intelligence gathering when the core team is not present. Within each region several sites are identified and ranked taking into consideration any leads, general interest of prospects, difficulties, resource allocation, etc. The expedition schedule is then fitted around the most interesting sites, placing a large importance on securing promising sites where excellent specimens have emerged or are highly likely to do so.

Even with superior planning and logistics nothing can be taken for granted in the Great North, where nature has a way of making a man feel very small. Unpredictability comes with the terrain, and not only due to natural causes.
